What Nutrients Does Spirulina Need?

Spirulina is a microalgae, and like all plants, it needs a specific set of nutrients to grow. The key elements in a spirulina growth medium are:

  • Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda): Provides carbon and maintains the high pH (9–11) that spirulina thrives in.
  • Potassium nitrate: The primary nitrogen source, essential for protein synthesis and rapid growth.
  • Potassium sulphate: Provides potassium and sulphur for cellular functions.
  • Magnesium sulphate (Epsom salt): Critical for chlorophyll production and photosynthesis.
  • Urea or ammonium sulphate: An alternative nitrogen source used in some formulations.
  • Micronutrients (iron, zinc, manganese, etc.): Required in tiny amounts but essential for enzyme function and healthy growth.

How to Use Spirulina Fertilizer: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Start with Clean Water

Always use clean, chlorine-free water. RO water, borewell water, or rainwater all work well. Avoid tap water unless you let it sit for 24 hours to dechlorinate, or use a dechlorination tablet.

Step 2: Dissolve the Fertilizer

Add the recommended dose of spirulina fertilizer to your water and stir until completely dissolved. For our product, the standard dose is clearly marked on the packaging. Do not exceed the recommended dose — more fertilizer does not mean faster growth and can actually harm your culture.

Step 3: Check and Adjust pH

After dissolving the fertilizer, check the pH of your medium. It should be between 9 and 10.5. If it's too low, add a small amount of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and stir. If it's too high (above 11), dilute with a little more water.

Step 4: Add Your Spirulina Culture

Once your medium is prepared and the pH is correct, add your spirulina mother culture. A good starting ratio is 1 part culture to 3–4 parts fresh medium.

Step 5: Top Up Regularly

As your spirulina grows and you harvest, you'll need to top up the medium with fresh fertilizer solution. A good rule of thumb is to replace 20–30% of the medium every 7–10 days, or whenever you harvest. This keeps nutrient levels optimal and prevents the buildup of metabolic waste.

How to Maximise Your Spirulina Yield

Beyond using the right fertilizer, here are the key factors that will boost your yield:

Optimise Light Exposure

Spirulina needs 10–14 hours of light per day at an intensity of 2500–5000 lux. Outdoors in Indian sunlight, this is easy to achieve for most of the year. Indoors, use a full-spectrum grow light positioned 20–30 cm above the culture surface.

Maintain Ideal Temperature

The sweet spot for spirulina growth is 30–35°C. Below 20°C, growth slows dramatically. Above 38°C, the culture can be damaged. In most parts of India, outdoor temperatures are naturally ideal for 8–10 months of the year.

Stir Consistently

Spirulina cells need to be in constant motion to access light and nutrients evenly. Stir manually 4–6 times a day, or use a continuous circulation pump. Cultures that are not stirred enough will have uneven growth and lower yields.

Harvest at the Right Time

Harvest when your culture is at peak density — typically every 7–14 days. Waiting too long leads to self-shading, where the dense culture blocks light from reaching lower cells, slowing growth. Regular harvesting keeps the culture in its fastest growth phase.

Troubleshooting Common Spirulina Growth Problems

Culture Turning Yellow or Brown

This usually indicates nitrogen deficiency or pH that's too low. Check your pH first, then consider adding a small top-up dose of fertilizer. If the problem persists, do a 50% medium replacement with fresh fertilizer solution.

Slow Growth

Check all four key factors: light, temperature, pH, and nutrients. The most common causes of slow growth are insufficient light and low temperature. In winter months, consider moving your culture indoors under a grow light.

Contamination (Other Algae or Bacteria)

A healthy spirulina culture at high pH (above 9.5) is naturally resistant to most contaminants. If you notice unusual colours (red, brown, or black patches), remove the affected portion and do a full medium replacement. Always use clean equipment and avoid introducing untreated water.
